Thank you. I modified the icon on my desktop to use the "-silent" option as you suggested, and steam started without the welcome page or news page, but i was able to play half-life, which is the only game I really play on Steam. When I exited Half-Life, my taskbar icon disappeared, and it doesn't appear as a running process when I type "ps -A" Is this normal?
