Is your machine connected to the net ? It's possible that only the system "head" (monitor/keyboard) is frozen and that the rest of the system is alive. You can try to ping the system and eventually use ssh to log in remotely. Maybe you can unfreeze it too, for example by killing/restarting the X server.
