I think it may be a graphic card driver problem - it runs on a kernel (system) level, so it can do a full range of harm to the system, including system freezes.

Is your machine connected to the net ? It's possible that only the system "head" (monitor/keyboard) is frozen and that the rest of the system is alive. You can try to ping the system and eventually use ssh to log in remotely. Maybe you can unfreeze it too, for example by killing/restarting the X server. You can also collect all kinds of debugging information remotely.
