The ONLY difference between platinum and gold is whether the app works out of the box or needs tweaks. Both ratings mean an app works perfectly. The point is to let users know at a glance whether they need to do anything beyond just running the installer. This doesn't prevent all older apps from getting platinum ratings; most run just fine with the default setting of XP.
