Some GNU+Linux distributions have worked around this by providing 32bit libraries to support WINE binaries compiled for 32bit in parallel to the rest of the system. I myself use Archlinux, whose users generally frown on mixing bitness in a single installation in that way. Instead we prefer a 32bit chroot bottled environment. I compile WINE (almost daily) from source in my 32bit chroot and launch the applications I install there with the schroot program.
