Instead of inelegant, one could argue that using a Wineprefix is unwieldy; you'd become unable to install and run the software from any graphical file browser, and you'd have to type in more in the terminal. While the Wineprefix is useful, perhaps some effort should go into Wine having a system that allows you to set a default prefix or change prefixes per application run, like in Winecfg.
