Since Steam Overlay broke many games when it was introduced with the aforementioned steam update, I feel that the same problem plagues your current system. TF2, being a Source game, probably worked fine as long as you were using wine 1.3 or newer, but a recent update may have broken the functionality of the overlay. Can you revert back to your previous distro to verify that it still works there?
