Thanks. Switched to the OSS driver and the problem disappeared. ALSA isn't all it is cracked up to be I guess. There is a UBUNTU problem that I will report there. When the switch to OSS happens, all sound gets muted and the levels are turned very low as well. This being an unexpected result, I figure its their problem.
