If your using Ubuntu I would recommend following the instructions on this page http://www.winehq.org/download/deb. Then you can use Synaptic to download and install the current release of wine (1.2rc6 I believe). Also, if you install it this way you will also receive updates via the Update manager so you'll never have to build wine from source. Unless you're up for the challenge. :) Hope this helps
