Upgrade to 1.1.41 and see if that fixes it for you. I had noticed some flakiness (though not actually crashing) in inserting symbols and equations a couple of weeks ago, but I don't see it now in 1.1.41. If 1.1.41 doesn't fix it for you: do you have symbol.ttf installed? If not, try installing it.
