Oddly it is fine in Powerpoint. The problem was in MS Word 2003. I also have a doc file with an image in the footer -> when I scroll down to the footer it causes Word to crash every time (not sure if it is png though). If I remove gdiplus override then this file no longer crashes but the graphics don't look quite right (I can see them so assume not png).
