thanks for the replies. i have installed the latest version from the synaptic after going through the version specification in the list. it was a simple 'Mark for installation' and 'Apply'. however isnt there a sudo apt-get install way of doing this installation? i really dont want to compile/configure and do a simple install of the latest version.
