You should be able to remove the dev version and then install the stable
version.  However, what is broken in the stable version is going to STAY
broken.  There are no fixes coming for it.  That is why when folks
complain about brokenness in the stable version, we tell them to use the
development version.  If you have a problem with the dev version and
what you need works in the stable version, file a bug report IF one does
not already exist.  If one does exist, create a login and VOTE for it. 
This tells developers how many folks are affected.
