I'm sure the 8bit mode is supported, because it worked in Windows XP on the same laptop. Maybe linux drivers dropped the 8bit support? If it is so, it is very sad (I've used to play StarCraft with my friends from this laptop, but since switching to linux I can't). Probably, some legacy version of drivers/wine/whatever?
