if anyone else runs into this.. apparently 10.4 defaults all installs as universal, so... even all the Wine libraries and dlls and everything gets some useless PPC code thrown into them... forcing the compiler to do only i386 and everything compiles fine. Didn't ever have to do that on 10.5...
