Also having a working setup helps too. Linux kernel had FF broken for a while due to 64-32 bit translation bug. And watch out for some other drivers (like vmware) breaking things as well (if you have vmware running it's drivers do something nasty to the USB which breaks joysticks in an interesting ways).
