unable to set display resolution in 3d applications

Okay, I've read around for a couple of days, and tried back and forth with all kinds of shit. Still, Half-life 2: DM won't let me change the resolution. :?

It's stuck on 640x480, and the roll-down-menu is blank.
The selector for aspect ratio is greyed out.

xrandr gives me all the normal resolutions from 320x240 to 1440x900.
glxgears works fine.
glxinfo: direct rendering: Yes

I Have GeForce 8500 GT with driver version 180.60
Wine 1.1.12 (latest stable for Gentoo atm) I've tried 1.1.27 with no luck.

Windows version set to XP by default.
I did winetrick d3dx9 with no change.
Emulated virtual desktop with no change.
Sound and inputs works smooth.
For reference, i get exactly the same problem with the 3d-demo "fr-025-final2.exe".

I run steam with this command:

> env WINEPREFIX="/home/kristoffer/.wine" WINEDEBUG=-all wine "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe"

I then run hl2:dm like this:

> -fullscreen -console -heapsize 512000 -novid -width 720 -height 480

Please help, or some hints to where i could look for solutions!
In advance, thank you!
