At least with TF2, the game goes from great performance with decent settings in Windows, to barely playable with all settings on low in Wine. Can Steam games run well in Wine without having a machine so powerful it can overcome any software problems? Is there a list of games that run well (i.e. frame rate) rather than just "correctly" like on the AppDB? Steam is just a distribution system, not a graphics engine. So, I'll assume you're talking about Source (Valve's graphics engine, which uses DirectX as its only back end). Many of the non-Valve games on Steam do not use Source. I don't think it's possible to create a list of games that run "well", since the results are going to vary depending on the hardware, drivers, and version of Wine with which they're tested. Likewise, your idea of a powerful machine might not equal mine. My machine's about two years old and it seems to play most source games well with moderate-to-high graphics settings.
