I forgot to mention some more stuff:

If you can avoid it, avoid installing DEBs directly. By which I mean, install a package repository if you can like shown in the link in the previous post. This way, you'll automatically get any latest versions of Wine through the package manager rather than having to worry about them yourself.

Also, when it's installed properly, you can open up a console, use the 'cd' command to go to your exe's directory, and use 'wine programname.exe' to start it. Opening the exe with Wine through your file manager works too, but you'll probably miss any warnings, errors or crashes that Wine spits out when your program won't work.
