One of the biggest things lacking in linux is proper scanning support. The Samsung CLX-3170 is an amazing little printer. It's network based and even comes in a wireless version. It uses up toner more than most but it's overall functionality makes up for it. With Samsung's "Smarthru 4" software I was hopeful it was possible to install over Wine and have a fully functional print and scan solution with generated "searchable" PDFs something that is not possible using a scanner on linux. The packaged linux software is at best abysmal and actually breaks cups/xsane. My question is has anybody had any success loading windows printer drivers using Wine? The reason being is that the Smarthru software installs a TWAIN driver. If somehow the software was able to do this you could have a fully functional scanning solution through Wine. Currently this networked printer allows us to use it on Ubuntu through a virtualized XP. Which is ok but still requires a Windows license. Any help installing or mimicing Windows drivers in Wine would be greatly appreciated.
