While you're looking for a good IDE (I also recommend CodeBlocks, which I use when not doing the usual gnome-edit coding), check Valgrind. One of the wonders of coding for Unix is this great set of tools that help you do everything! (Also be sure to check "insight", it helps a lot with debugging).
