"sudo dpkg -i /path/to/package/packagename.deb" will install it. you could also add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt jaunty main #WineHQ - Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope" this is explained step by step here: http://www.winehq.org/download/deb i'm not sure that will solve your problem. but it's recommendable none the less.
