Thank you guys for your advice!
You pointed me in the right direction-

When I ran the EXE from the command line- EG:

wine nuke.exe

it worked perfectly fine! Strange! I don't understand it- but I'm quite happy it worked. 
I will remember your troubleshooting advice!
