The difference is not only drivers in Linux, ATI has always had horrendous drivers. I have tried ATI about four times now, and every single time I have returned the card for an nVidia. ATI hardware itself isn't bad, but their drivers stink. nVidia has better driver support both in Windows and most definitely in Linux! It doesn't matter how much power a GPU has if you can't use it do to drivers.
