Thanks for the info. Guitar Pro has decided to work on my latest reinstall of Ubuntu 8.10. I am not sure why but I had installed extra codecs and restricted extras in case that was the issue. I still got strange messages about Alsa when installing G Pro (as in my original post), but timidity is working fine as the midi for G Pro. Graham
