Good to hear that you'll have a try with Ubuntu. ;) Latest stable is 8.10 or 8.04.2 LTS your choice. But first of all you should do a Google with your sound card/exact VGA/wired and/or wireless cards if there are problems with them. Join your country's ubuntu community (mine is www.ubuntu.hu) and you can save time by starting the search there and reading the distro documents, big help for a new user. :)
