I tried your suggestion and it seems to have worked out great. So far I have not been able to kill the app. Even tried some of the applets it execs (which also had problems) and they all seem to function just fine so far. Thanks very much for your suggestion! If you have time could you let me know what showed up in your stderr that led you to the solution? I did not see any references to fonts or courier new in mine. If you don't have the time, no problem. The program runs in wine!! Sincere thanks. Lenny
