never heard that problem before. Have you checked if your distro is configured to react somehow when you press a certain combination of keys? for example Ubuntu, gets in 'assistive' mode when you press shift for 5 secs or 6 times in a row, effectively locking keyboard input. If there's any possibility your distro do something like that, to disable it first, and see if that solves the problem.
