DVDs are best played in their native environment, though you can check the 
appdb for a particular DVD program you want to try.

Not necessary.  Just don't run untrusted binaries in wine (though you really 
shouldn't be running untrusted binaries in any environment).

You might find it easier to learn and get questions answered about a more 
mainstream distribution unless one of your Linux using friends that you can 
turn to suggested that distribution.
