I have been told (but wouldn't know how to verify) that CrossOver Mac contains its own X server that is missing some bugs from the one that comes standard with OS X. Wine does not have anything similar, and it suffers from those bugs. Wine always prints some debugging information to standard error, including information about missing DLL's, but it's only visible if you run Wine from a terminal.
