Re: Counterstrike 1.6 problems

Steve,

Using a phrase "put this to rest" is a rude approach at help. Frankly, I no longer care if this works for you.

It took 2 emails to get your wine version (which you've compiled from source), 3 emails to get your NVIDIA driver version (which has a bug report with the game you are running), and to top it off, you're being impatient with possibly the only person willing to help you.

The solution to your problem lies deep deep down inside the heart of your ignorance.

Tres,

Maybe I wasn't clear, and if so I apologize.

Mine does NOT load in DirectX.  In your message in the bugzilla report, you said yours did load in Direct X.  Specifically, you said

"What I've noticed is d3d works well, but OpenGL crashes."

It does not load in Software mode, either.  For command line parameters, I refered to http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Steam_Command_Line_Options#Goldsource_Games for guidance.  It suggested:

-gl for OpenGL
-d3d for DirectX; and;
-soft for Software

It appears I neglected to mention the video driver version I use, which was 169.09.  I do, indeed, use 32-bit Ubuntu.

You are correct, yours loading in DirectX is a difference.

When you load in directx, do you issue the -d3d command in CounterStrike's launch properties?  Have you tried software too?

The gameui_english.txt was not my fix, I am not trying to suggest that.

Editing gamui_english was something that got the game loaded.  gameui_english.txt is a file from the original hl/cs install.  It has been rolled into half-life.gcf so that people, such as myself don't modify it anymore.  It was remove with the introduction of steam, and is no longer needed.  It is similar to placing a crosshairs.spr in your sprites folder to override your sprites.

My screenshots were only uploaded to prove that the game would load when that file was created, it was not meant to provide a fix to the loading issue.  Normally that file is a complicated language map for menu items.

Where you able to obtain your driver version?  I am still curious what version you are running.

I assume you are on 32-bit ubuntu?

To answer your questions and to put this to rest.

I use an MSI NX6200AX-TD256, which is an nVidia card.  My wine version is wine-0.9.55-376-g01cba07 (which is a git version).  However, I discounted your solution to the problem because of the screenshots you provided.  I also discounted it because my version of HL/CS doesn't have a gameui_english.txt.  I verified this by executing

sudo find | grep "gameui_english.txt"

from the top directory of my drive.  It found no instances of this file on the drive in any directory.  I verified that I properly constructed this command by executing:

sudo find | grep "Steam.exe"

which returned:

./.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/Steam.exe

I believe your solution fixed your problem.  I am just not convinced it fits my problem.  Also, executing the program in either software or DirectX causes the same issue.  It starts, it puts up the pre-menu graphic and crashes.  According to the bugzilla report you linked, it worked well for you in DirectX.

The symptoms of the bug are as you described.  The game crashes for me at the picture of gordon, right before I could click the menu items.

The screenshots you are looking at are after hours of troubleshooting.

If you're using nvidia, nvidia-settings should give your driver version.

Also do a wine --version for your wine version.

I was only able to get the game to load after removing all spaces from my menu items.  My initial symptoms match yours.

Are you using an nvidia card?

Tres,

I read all three links.  I also looked at the screenshots.  Evidence of the fact you actually have gotten further than I have can best be seen in http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=10699.  I haven't gotten that far.  CS dies prior to rendering the menu for me.  On the other hand, it appears you are actually getting scenes rendered... albeit with odd coloration.

How much of the thread did you read?  My errors were identical.

If you are on a similar nvidia driver using OpenGL, please don't rule out the links I posted.

Tres,

While he did link me a Source bug, it did resolve part of the issue.  For that, I am thankful!

However, the problem listed in the links you've provided unfortunately doesn't cover my situation.  I'm not even getting to the point where the 1.6 graphics engine even fires up.  Now, it's dying at the loading screen (the one with the two counter-terrorists in the picture and the counterstrike logo in the lower left corner.).  I'm not getting the initial menu or anything.  Have you seen anything like that before?  If so, how is it resolved?

Steve,

Rest assured, it's most likely a video driver issue.  He linked you the "source" bug, however, you are not running the source engine.

  • Half-Life2 and CounterStrike source use the "Source" engine.
  • Half-Life1 and CounterStrike 1.6 use the modified "quake2" engine, re-branded as "GoldenSource".

There are known issues with NVIDIA drivers 169.04 - 169.09 (and possibly others) with GoldenSource games.

Here's a few links:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=102706
http://fatbuttlarry.blogspot.com/2008/02/half-life-1-struggles.html

I had no luck on this mailing list either, (Steam and Wine don't debug well together, so I couldn't provide enough information).

I kept searching until I found the issue.  It is caused by the NVIDIA driver, but only affects this game from what I've found (Quake2, Quake3, native and in wine work flawlessly).

Hope this helps you in your struggles!

James,

I see that now.  Unfortunately, your prior message wasn't clear as to whether you wanted me to post a bug or search for a bug.  Anything past that, I'm just going to let it lay where it landed.  Right now I just want to figure out what I'm doing wrong with this game.  It's a bit frustrating, as I've managed to get WoW, EVE Online, Starcraft, Warcraft II and III working, but I can't get this bleeding game working.

What I was trying to suggest is that this problem did not have an easy
fix and was in the bugzilla already.
