Well, it seems the problem has something to do with my GPU (a VIA UniChrome) and its driver (the only one I got to work in this box was xserver-xorg-video-openchrome). I followed a suggestion to disable DRI in xorg.conf, and Wine seemingly doesn't freeze anymore. Luckily, I (still) can live without DRI.
