It sounds like you're doing the right things, but the
results aren't as good as we would have hoped.  I'm still
holding the hunch that the problem is caused by a problem
between the graphics card hardware, the graphics card
driver, and the X server.  (A year or two ago, my main
system was unstable with X lockups and such, and I wasn't
even using Wine, DRI, or GLX.  The next two Mandriva
releases have been much more stable.)

One diagnostic procedure I would recommend is to see whether
the hung system answers pings after the ssh session hangs.

Another idea would be to try to kill the X server rather
than the Wine and application processes.

The only other thing I can suggest would be to make sure you
have the latest updates to your OS, especially the kernel
and X.  If nothing else helps, perhaps the next OS release
will be more stable.  You might also file a bug report with
your OS distribution to see if they can isolate and fix the
problem.
