Is it possible to run wine (wineconsole??) without X windows.
I just have a simple character app that executes in a DOS window
and uses printf().
Yes. As long as the app doesn't do anything that requires an X server,
wine won't attempt to use one (it even builds without X libs).

I tried 0.9.30 and wineconsole doing control_alt_f1 and it BLEW
I couldnt even alt_f7 to get back. I had to reboot.
Wine shouldn't be able to cause that problem, nor should any userspace
app. It sounds to me like a bug in something else.
