I have just one application running under wine which I use
intermittently.  Yesterday I started it and while it ran as usual a
monitor showed the cpu suddenly fully loaded and shortly the cpu high
temperature alarm  sounded.  I shut down the system, rebooted and tried
again with the same result.  What has changed and how do I fix it?

Fix your hardware. No software package should ever cause the cpu to overheat till it needs to shutdown. This is either a hardware problem or your room is way too hot. The first thing I would do is check the cpu fan and blow the dust out of it.
