Yeah, I believe the same thing happens with some Win 95/98 games when you try to run them on Win 2000/XP with compatibility mode changed. I have seen this happen when there was really much space available, and the program was quite old. I'd guess it is a bug in the program (using a variable that is too small to hold the value).
