You can get optimized clients, on this page http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/unix.html they have linux builds for i686, and for x86_64, so it is as optimized as it can be. I've found the linux version to be 30% faster than the windows one. And thanks for joining!

It's never too late to build a team. Wish I could donate my Seti@Home stats to you guys. I had close to 22,000 units completed when I quit. Now I think they just sit there.

This was all done on x86 PCs.
One thing I would caution folks to be careful about is the email address they assign to their membership. I started back when the @Home system was still running. When AT&T took over @Home they immediately killed the email accounts and stopped accepting emails. This meant that I could no longer manage my account with Seti@Home as they didn't, and may still not, have a way to change the email address associated with the account.
