You are also going to have a lot of problems with any version of Wine in Ubuntu 12.04, especially if it is 64 bit. Installing an older version of Ubuntu, or a different distro, is more likely to solve your problem than installing an ancient version of Wine. You didn't say what version of Wine you did try; if it's not the latest development release, upgrade. If that doesn't fix it, post terminal output.
