Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to announce the next session of the CONVERSE ER Spring 2025
Webinar Series. Our webinar series aims to provide a platform for graduate
students and early career scientists to share their research and develop
new skills relevant to the field of volcanic science.

The next webinar will be presented by *Simone Aveni* from Sapienza
University of Rome and University of Turin.

*Title: *Satellite-Based Thermal InfraRed (TIR) Monitoring of Volcanoes:
>From Hydrothermal Systems to Effusive Eruptions
*Time: *February 25, 2025 at 4 PM EST (UTC-5)

*Please, register for this and upcoming webinars at: *

(No re-registration required if you have already signed up to previous
sessions this Spring)

*Bio and summary:* Simone Aveni is a third-year PhD candidate jointly
affiliated with the University of Turin and Sapienza University of Rome,
Italy, and a member of the MIROVA team. He completed his BSc and MScRes at
Coventry University, UK, where he focused on investigating volcanic
activity using a combination of different satellite techniques. His recent
work has reinvigorated the study of thermal remote sensing of volcanic
activity through Thermal InfraRed (TIR) analysis, developing the TIRVolcH
algorithm, specifically designed to detect subtle-to-high volcanic thermal
anomalies on a global scale. He has also introduced a novel method (VRPTIR)
for quantifying thermal energy outputs from hydrothermal systemsâ??such as
crater lakes and fumarolic fieldsâ??enhancing the monitoring of remote yet
potentially hazardous volcanic systems. In this webinar, Simone will
explore why TIR channels are critical for volcano monitoring, the
challenges in harnessing their full potential, and the advanced
methodologies required to extract meaningful insights. He will also present
global case studies, including previously unseen data, demonstrating both
the effectiveness of TIR analysis and the unique source of information it
provides for understanding volcanic activity.
