In the last years, they have occurred at Pico de Orizaba due to the availability of loose material, extreme climate conditions favoring certain weathering- and erosion processes, as well as triggers being mostly extreme precipitation events. Moreover, the glacier retreat that has occurred over the past few decades has resulted in the exposure of loose material that is susceptible to being mobilised, thereby increasing the likelihood of lahars and other mass movements. As glaciers recede, they can become a source of water themselves. However, they can also become unstable, as has been observed in mountainous regions. In this seminar, I will discuss the upper slope conditions at Pico de Orizaba volcano, as well as the trigger conditions of previous inter-eruptive lahars within the glacier-influenced basins at this volcano. They are two neighboring volcanoes, aligned north-south, whose drainage network is integrated. Tolimán volcano has not exhibited any eruptive activity during the Holocene epoch. In contrast, Atitlán, the youngest volcano, has it last confirmed eruption in 1856. Despite the absence of recent volcanic activity, three disasters have occurred in the area since 2000. These events occurred in 2002, 2005, and 2010, respectively, and were caused by the formation of lahars triggered by rainfall. The lahars resulted in the burial of the towns of El Porvenir, Panabaj, and Pampojilá. In light of these events, the project "Warning and monitoring system for volcanic eruptions in Guatemala and disseminated in Central America" developed a lahar hazard map for this volcanic complex. The map and associated products represent the outcome of a multinational and inter-institutional collaboration between INSIVUMEH, CONRED, and the Vivamos Mejor Association (Guatemala), in conjunction with UNAM (Mexico), and funded by the Swiss Cooperation of Central America. These tools are fundamental for comprehensive risk management and disaster risk reduction in Guatemala.
