Dear Colleagues,

Here are some updates from the IAVCEI/IACS Joint Commission on Volcano-Ice
Interactions (VIIC):

_______________________________________________

*Online Workshop on Volcano-Ice Interactions*

The VIIC is holding an online workshop from 13-15 January 2025. The
workshop will be focusing on volcano-ice interactions but is suitable for
both volcanologists and glaciologists in the same way. It is also open to
everyone else interested in this topic. The workshop will be a mixture of
talks given by different groups, e.g., experienced senior researchers,
early career scientists, and volcano observatory members, followed by
different hands-on exercises each day. The workshop is organized in three
(half-day) blocks including a general introduction to glaciology and
volcanology on the first day, and will then focus on glaciovolcanism in the
geological record (second day) and present-day glaciovolcanism (third day).
Practical sessions will cover aspects such as remote sensing of glaciers,
the Polar Rock Repository Database, and glaciovolcanic hazard modelling.

You can register for this workshop by sending an email to Tryggvi
Unnsteinsson (*t.unnsteinsson.23@xxxxxxxxxx <t.unnsteinsson.23@xxxxxxxxxx>*).
Please indicate your full name, degree and current affiliation (if
existing), and preferred email-address. We also ask you to provide a brief
description about your scientific background and/or why you are interested
in attending the workshop.

*What:* Workshop on volcano-ice interactions
*When:* 13-15 January 2025, 16:00 to 20:00 GMT
*Where:* Online via Zoom
*Registration:* Via email to Tryggvi Unnsteinsson
(*t.unnsteinsson.23@xxxxxxxxxx
<t.unnsteinsson.23@xxxxxxxxxx>*)
*Registration deadline:* 6 January 2025

More information will follow after the registration and closer to the start
of the workshop. Do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.

*Online Seminar November 2024*

Please join us for our next seminar with Tryggvi Unnsteinsson, University
of Aberdeen. Registration via the link below is required in order to
receive the Zoom meeting invitation and/or access the recording, which will
become available after the meeting.

*IAVCEI/IACS VIIC Seminar:* "Using glaciers to inform on volcanic activity"
by Tryggvi Unnsteinsson

*When:* Thursday, 28th November 2024, 17:00 GMT

*Abstract:* Volcanoes are capable of altering the mass balance and dynamics
of overlying glaciers. In this talk we will look at how we can take
advantage of these volcano-driven glacier changes to inform on the
underlying volcanic activity. We will apply this to both localised melt
features: glaciovolcanic caves and chimneys; as well as to how volcanoes
affect the overall mass balance of glaciers in a global context.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing
information about joining the meeting.

*Reminder: IAVCEI Scientific Assembly 2025 - Session on Volcano-Ice
Interactions*

We are pleased to highlight the session *'Volcano-ice interactions on Earth
and beyond'* at the IAVCEI Scientific Assembly 2025 in Geneva (29 June â?? 4
July 2025).

*Session Description:* Interactions between volcanoes and ice occur in
several ways, with implications for our understanding of volcanoes, the
cryosphere, and associated hazards. Volcanic/geothermal activity can alter
glacier dimensions, dynamics and hydrology, which can in turn trigger
floods and lahars. Glaciers and associated meltwater can also impact
volcanic processes, either directly via lava-water interactions and by
controlling the distribution of erupted material, or by adjusting volcanic
system loads. As such, glaciovolcanic deposits provide valuable insight
into the past environment at volcanic regions across the globe. Despite
their significance, interactions between volcanoes and ice are often hard
to observe and remain poorly understood. In this session (organized by the
IAVCEI/IACS commission on Volcano-Ice Interaction) we invite contributions
focused on volcano-ice interactions and their implications in all forms.
This includes insights from field observations, remote sensing,
experiments, and modelling.

*Invited Speaker:* Kathleen Scanlon, University of Maryland & NASA Goddard
Space Flight Center
