Dear Colleagues,
We would like to bring your attention to our session at IAVCEI in Geneva,
Switzerland, June 29th â?? July 4th 2025.
Theme 3: Volcanic Processes
Session Title: *Crystals and bubbles in magma: Understanding their
formation, interaction, feedbacks and effects in magma properties and
eruption behaviour*
Session Description:
Crystals and bubbles form and evolve during magma ascent via nucleation,
growth and agglomeration/coalescence. Crystal-bubble interactions from the
nano- to macro-scale throughout the different stages of magma ascent affect
magma properties, degassing style, ascent rate and ultimately eruptive
style. Crystals of different sizes, shapes and compositions can promote
heterogeneous bubble nucleation, enhance bubble deformation and coalescence
and reduce the critical porosity for permeability in magma. Besides,
bubbles, fed by a variety of volatile species with contrasting diffusion
coefficients, create obstacles for element diffusion and rheological
changes that affect crystal growth kinetics. All these processes and
feedbacks can cause eruption style shifts. This session aims to bring
together studies on such interactions in three-phase magmas and their
effects on magma properties, ascent dynamics and eruptive behaviour.
Experiments, analyses of natural rocks, thermodynamic and physical
modelling or other relevant approaches on the interactions between solid
and gas phases in magma are welcome.
