Geothermal Director, Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, University of
Nevada, Reno

The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at the University of Nevada,
Reno (UNR) invites applications for a tenure-track Associate Professor who
will serve as Director of the Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy
(GBCGE). The GBCGE is a nationally and internationally recognized center of
excellence in research, training, and outreach in the science of geothermal
resources. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to develop
broad programs in research and education in the field of geothermal energy.
Research will include innovative approaches to understanding the
complexities of fluid flow in the crust and must be focused primarily on
Nevada and the surrounding region. Research will also commonly involve
multi-departmental and multi-institutional efforts, including the
development of datasets, assessments, and reports on Nevadaâ??s geothermal
resources. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in geothermal
related topics (typically one course per year) in the Department of
Geological Sciences and Engineering (DGSE), supervising graduate students,
and organizing geothermal workshops. The successful candidate will
communicate effectively with the public and community leaders regarding the
geothermal resources of Nevada.

NBMG is a research and public service unit of UNR and serves as the state
geological survey of Nevada. Managed as part of the Mackay School of Earth
Sciences and Engineering in the College of Science at UNR, NBMG functions
as both an academic unit and statewide agency. NBMG is also part of the
broader Nevada Geosciences group at UNR, which includes the Nevada
Seismological
Laboratory and DGSE (https://www.unr.edu/geology/

Principal scientists at NBMG are tenure-track faculty members. The GBCGE
resides within NBMG and fulfills one of the primary missions of NBMG, which
is to assess natural resources across the state and disseminate data for
use by state and federal agencies, industry, and academia. Nevada is one of
the most exciting regions in the world to conduct research in the
geosciences and one of the best for the study of geothermal energy. The
successful applicant will have access to many state-of-the-art facilities
at UNR, including an electron microprobe, two SEMs, fluid-inclusion and
Raman facilities, laser ablation ICP-MS, geodesy laboratory, and a fleet of
field vehicles managed by NBMG. For further information about NBMG, please
consult our website (http://www.nbmg.unr.edu

).

Applicants must have a doctorate in geology, geologic engineering,
geophysics, or a related geoscience field and a demonstrated record of
research on topics related to geothermal energy as indicated by
dissertation research, industry experience, and/or peer-reviewed
publications. The successful candidate must have at least 5 years of
postdoctoral experience in geothermal research. Excellent communication
skills are required, as demonstrated in written application materials,
publications, public outreach, and presentations. Experience in attracting
and managing outside funding is essential. The successful candidate must
also have demonstrated ability to develop/coordinate programs and work in
teams to accomplish major goals. Preference will be given to candidates
who, in their letters of interest, explain achievable plans for funded
research on Nevada-focused topics in geothermal energy and who understand
NBMGâ??s role as the state geological survey of Nevada.
