1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 From: Ben Geotenerife <ben@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Dear Volcanological community (apologies for cross-posting), Over the last ten years we have seen an increase in the number of informal reports we have been receiving from national and international students and colleagues we train and work with in the Canary Islands on scientific bullying of young scientists in the workplace. Academic bullying describes a range of behaviours that can have a heavy impact on young scientists at the start of their careers. We have joined up with the Academic Parity movement in the USA to research the issue and report back. Our first objective is to quantify the size of the problem, to build on the work they have already done in the USA to give an international perspective. We will also run a parallel information campaign, to ensure we raise awareness of behaviours that are unacceptable in the workplace or academic environment and provide references to resources that are available not only to inform but also to assist those being impacted by these behaviours. The aim is to publish a comprehensive paper to build on the excellent work already carried out by the Academic Parity movement in the USA to analyse and report on the extent of the problem globally; build a resource database which could be of assistance to those who are targets of this behaviour and provide concrete recommendations for the future. It is entirely possible that some behaviours are pervasive because of a lack of concrete information on the subject: if that is the case, highlighting the issue, its causes and impacts, could help to modify behaviours in certain settings.
