Dear volcano community,

We wanted to share that the IAVCEI Cities and Volcanoes (CAV) Commission is
accepting applications for the position of CAV Commission Secretary. All
information needed to apply is below. The information is also be posted on
our website:
https://citiesonvolcanoes.wordpress.com/2024/05/13/call-for-cav-secretary/
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://citiesonvolcanoes.wordpress.com/2024/05/13/call-for-cav-secretary/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!ZE8NdevuMtsv_F-NdtEDESaYjpXCwAlQnCd5pC5uvcn8yl_g5z7v-Li-NzsNpbvjoAn6GX7Xz3rzdlsyvIBOCOhyZw$>

*What does being the CAV commission secretary involve?*

   - Organisation and support of Commission activities and initiatives.
This involves scheduling across many time zones, taking notes in meetings,
and supporting the leadership team with specific initiatives.
   - Communicating with our membership and COV organizers. During the lead
up to conferences, communication with our members and local committees
   increases.
   - Management and upkeep of the CAV Commission website and membership
mailing list. The website is managed through WordPress and the mailing list
is supported by Mail Chimp. No specific skills needed for either and
training will be provided on both systems.
   - Navigating sensitive conversations and maintaining confidentiality
(for example, of the identity of COV host candidates).
   - Supporting the Commission Leader with the election process. The next
election is due in early 2027.

*Other relevant information:*

   - As CAV Commission Executive Committee meetings and business are
conducted in English, the Secretary must be comfortable understanding,
writing, and reading in English. Proficiency in additional languages is
   desirable.
   - The time commitment varies from 1-2 hours per month (most months) to
up to 3-5 hours in a week; during the busiest times. This will be at
specific phases of the COV bid process and in the lead up to COV
conferences. The timing of busy periods is generally known a year or more
   in advance.
   - The expectation is that the Secretary will serve for at least 2 years
(through the end of the process to select the COV14 host). Most past
   secretaries served for 4 years.

*How could being the CAV commission secretary benefit you?*

   - Insight into the conference organisation and decision-making process
   - Strengthen and/or extend your professional networks
   - Enhance organisational and management skills

*Other key information:*

The CAV Commission Executive group consists of five elected commissioners
(one is a past leader, and one is an ECR), who are supported by the
Secretary and the Special Projects Coordinator. In the past the role of
Secretary has typically been filled by an ECR, but this is not a
requirement and we encourage applications from individuals of all career
stages and welcome applications from all of those interested. This is a
voluntary position and no financial compensation will be provided. As with
all of the commissioners, the current secretary undertakes this work as a
service role as part of their current employment. After six years of
service and two COV conferences, Danielle Charlton is stepping down as
Commission Secretary. Thank you Danielle for your excellent work and your
valuable contributions to the CAV Commission.

*How to apply:*

Send your application via email to the CAV Commission Secretary Danielle
Charlton (d.charlton@xxxxxxxxxx). Include CAV Commission Secretary in the
email subject heading. The application must include:

   - Your full name, contact email address, role and current affiliation
   - Status as an Early Career Researcher or staff member (yes/no)
   - A CV or short description of your work in English (maximum 1 page)
   - A statement in English on why you would be an excellent CAV Commission
   Secretary (maximum 500 words).

*The deadline for candidate packages is Thursday 30 May 2024 at 23:00 NZST.* We
expect interviews to be the week of 3 June, and the appointment to be made
around 10 June. The handover with the current Secretary will be in the
middle-late June. We would like the new Secretary to be in place by early
July 2024.

If you have any questions, please contact Danielle Charlton (
d.charlton@xxxxxxxxxx).
