Dear colleagues,

The Asian School of Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University
(NTU) and the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) has up to 3 funded PhD
studentships in volcanology and igneous petrology.

One of these studentships is funded by a large multidisciplinary project
called InVEST (Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology)
that aims to look at volcanic and tectonic hazards in SE Asia.

Research projects include:

   1. *Constraining timescales of pre-eruptive magmatic processes in the
lead up to large caldera-forming eruptions in SE Asia*

This project will focus on charactersing pre-eruptive storage conditions
and timescales of the 1815 Tambora eruption, Indonesia. This will involve:

   -

Modelling trace element diffusion (Mg, Sr, Ba, Li) in plagioclase
crystals from erupted pumice clasts and cumulate samples in order to
determine timescales of pre-eruptive mixing, transport and storage.
Diffusion profiles of Fe-Mg in clinopyroxenes may also be used as a
   complementary source of timescale information.

   -

Tracking the evolution of volatile contents using apatite and melt
   inclusions.

   -

Constraining magma storage depths using volatile contents of plagioclase
   and clinopyroxene-hosted melt inclusions, clinopyroxene-liquid
thermobarometry and possibly phase equilibria experiments.

   -

Assessing variations in final magma decompression rates by modelling the
diffusion of water in clinopyroxenes and bubble number densities from
   different eruptive units.

   1. *Tectonic controls on the storage conditions, locations and sizes of
large explosive eruptions in SE Asia*

This project will involve:

   -
   - Using geopspatial data and machine learning to reconstruct edifice and
erupted volumes along the volcanic arcs of SE Asia (Sumatra, Java etc),
which will then be compared to other datasets such as geochemical
databases, crustal thickness, and fault maps of the region.
   - Using machine learning thermobarometers to estimate magma storage
depths, which will then be linked to these geochemical and geophysical
   datasets.
   - Then there would be scope to look at 1 or more volcanoes in depth and
do a petrological study to understand how its plumbing system is related to
   local tectonics.

Candidates with a strong background in geochemistry, petrology and
volcanology are encouraged to apply, but this is not a requirement.
Computational skills and prior analytical experience would be beneficial
but can also be taught during the program.

The initial deadline for applications for an August 2024 start is the *31st
of January 2024. *Applications may also be considered after this date.

Applications can be submitted at:

If you are interested or would like to discuss more about individual
projects or applications please contact Dr. Euan Mutch (

to anyone who may be interested.
