The Geology Program at Yellowstone National Park is hiring two people for
the 2024 season. These positions are federal seasonal positions that run
from late April to late October, 2024.



This position serves as a Geoscience Technician for the Geology Program of
Yellowstone National Park. The primary responsibility is to preserve the
natural integrity of geothermal areas in Yellowstone National Park. This is
a temporary position not to exceed 1039 hours per year and is located in
Old Faithful, WY in Yellowstone National Park. The incumbent is under the
supervision of the Geology Program manager located at the Yellowstone
Center for Resources and will work closely with Geology Program members and
other NPS Park staff to preserve and protect the natural integrity of
hydrothermal areas within the park. Successful candidates will have a
bachelorâ??s in geology or geophysics, fieldwork experience, experience
deploying and maintaining electronic field equipment, experience collecting
field data with ESRI software, and basic wood carpentry skills to perform
minor repairs to boardwalks in front country hydrothermal areas.



Among the duties of this position:

   - Identify and remediate damage and other human impacts to hydrothermal
   areas
   - Interact with Park visitors and educate them about geothermal features
   and safety
   - Perform damage assessments in hydrothermal areas with park law
   enforcement
   - Deploy and maintain geologic/geophysical monitoring systems
   - Collect physical data on hydrothermal features
   - Collect and manage data with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 ESRI
   software
   - Create and maintain organized notes on daily activities
   - Assist Park staff and visiting scientists with Park operations and
   research
   - Conduct geologic field mapping and other related geologic fieldwork
   - Construct and repair safety barriers and fencing in geothermal areas
   - Perform simple repairs on boardwalks in geothermal areas

Physical activities include sitting, standing, and working in an office,
laboratory, or meeting environment and traveling by motor vehicle.
Fieldwork will require basic carpentry work, walking, climbing, and camping
within mountainous terrain, sometimes for extended periods, often in
inclement or severe weather. Positions require hiking or riding in the
backcountry and dangerous geothermal environments for more than 4 miles per
day while carrying more than 40 pounds. Bending, lifting objects, and
carrying backpacks of variable weights will be required. Occasional travel
may be required.


Old Faithful is located in west-central Yellowstone National Park, WY. The
elevation at Old Faithful is 7,350 feet. Summer temperatures in Yellowstone
National Park vary from average lows of 30o F to 40o F to highs between 70o F
and 80o F. However, the weather is quite variable, so work in inclement
weather, which includes snow, may be necessary.


Community facilities such as grocery stores, a drugstore, motels, and
restaurants are available in West Yellowstone, MT, 30 miles away. A medical
clinic is available in Old Faithful. All other services are available in
Bozeman, MT, a 1.5 hour drive from West Yellowstone.
