*Abstract:*

Gas and particulate emissions accompanying volcanic eruptions present
significant health hazards to nearby communities. Their composition
reflects initial volatile contents and magma ascent processes and can be
used to reveal the dynamics that drive the surface activity. Open Path
Fourier Transform Infrared (OP-FTIR) spectroscopy has been used over the
past 3 decades as a tool to measure the relative abundances of major and
trace volcanic gases (including SO2, CO2, H2O, HF, HCl, CO, OCS) in a
variety of measurement geometries (e.g., direct line-of-sight, active
source, solar/lunar occultation). Here we argue that these data contain
additional information, specifically at longer wavelengths, that has been
overlooked until now. We will show that sulphate aerosols (SA) are
responsible for distinctive spectral features in the thermal infrared
window (750-1250 cm-1) and present an algorithm capable of quantifying
their abundance and size distribution from both absorption and emission
measurements. We evaluate its applicability and limitations using datasets
from recent eruptions at Fagradalfsjall in Iceland and Stromboli in Italy.
The SO2/SO42- ratio can be retrieved along with the size of the aerosol
fraction, providing a new tool to understand the rapid chemical and
physical processes occurring in very young plumes.

The COMET+ webinar series promotes research by collaborators of COMET
scientists. We aim to provide a platform for these researchers to showcase
their work to large and international audiences, opening doors to broader
collaborative networks and enhancing the communityâ??s diversity of
backgrounds and ideas.
