Dear Volcano List Colleagues,
It is with a heavy heart that I share news that Malcolm "Mac" Rutherford
passed away on October 3, 2023, three weeks after suffering a stroke. Mac
grew up in Saskatchewan and studied Engineering at the University of
Saskatchewan. He turned toward geology after carrying out field work for a
mining company. After obtaining a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in
1968, he pursued postdoctoral research at the University of California at
Los Angeles and joined the faculty at Brown University in 1970, where he
served as Chair of the Department of Geological Sciences from 1986-1991. At
Brown, Mac taught field geology, volcanology, geologic hazards, and
planetary petrology.

His early-career scientific interests were shaped by two events on the
world stage: the NASA Apollo program and the 1980 eruption of Mount St.
Helens. The latter launched a sequence of pivotal contributions,
culminating in an experimental approach for placing limits on the
environmental conditions at which magmas were stored prior to eruption. He
applied the approach to eruptions of Soufriere Hills Volcano, El Chichón,
Pinatubo, Campi Flegrei, Novarupta, Unzen, Mazama, Black Butte, and others.
This "phase equilibrium approach" was embraced by the volcanological
community and has become a part of ʻpetrologic monitoringʻ restless
volcanoes.

Additional areas where Mac's experiments advanced scientific understanding
of petrology and volcanism include the petrogenesis of Martian SNC magmas;
the origin, speciation, and concentrations of volatiles in the lunar
interior; the formation of lunar highlands KREEP; the solubility and
speciation of sulfur in a variety of magma compositions; defining the
conditions leading to liquid immiscibility; mineral barometry, esp.
involving amphiboles; and the kinetics of crystal nucleation and growth.

Mac continued to engage in research long after retirement (2006) by
advising students, supporting postdocs, publishing papers, collaborating,
attending conferences, and performing experiments -- most recently, a run
in "Bertha" the internally heated pressure vessel, on Sept 4. Mac fostered
a warm, collaborative, supportive research group, mentoring dozens of
students over decades who went on to NASA, university faculties, the United
States Geological Survey, federal labs, and work in industry. His legacy of
science and mentoring contributions extends to all corners of the Earth and
across the solar system.
