Dear Colleagues,
In view of the next *Cities on Volcanoes 12* held in Antigua, *Guatemala,
in February 2024*, we would like to draw your attention to this interesting
and multidisciplinary session:

103 (Theme 1) > Volcano geology and mapping for hazard assessment, risk and
resource-management, and building cultural value of the territory
This session will deal with examples of stratigraphic analysis, geological
and structural mapping and chronological reconstructions of recent to
active volcanoes as essential inputs for robust assessment of physical
volcanology and modeling, hazard evaluation, geoarchaeology surveys, risk
and resource-management, and building cultural appropriation of the
territory. We aim to stress the importance of geological and stratigraphic
studies in volcanic areas as the basis for understanding the eruptive
behaviour and future volcanic activity. Also, weâ??d like to reinforce
geological mapping as the main source of data for a multidisciplinary
knowledge of the structure of a volcanic system representing the basis for
analogical and numerical modelling of eruptive processes and providing
information to describe the processes that control unrest dynamics. We also
encourage multidisciplinary researches that integrate different
geochronological, paleomagnetic, palaeoecological and archaeological
methods to unravel the chronology of volcanic eruptions, particularly in
recent to active volcanoes. Particular interest is given to the role of
geological maps of volcanoes as fundamental tools for decision-making
processes, and how to present the geological information in maps, and which
information should be displayed, so that maps could be useful for
stakeholders interested in hazard and environmental management, risk
mitigation, land care, geo-cultural heritage, and sustainable development.
