2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: Benjamin Black <bb721@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Ph.D. position at Rutgers in the petrology and climate consequences of Earthâ??s largest magmatic systems *Applications are invited for a fully funded Ph.D. in the Rutgers University-New Brunswick Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences supervised by Dr. Ben Black. Candidates with keen observation skills, interdisciplinary interests, and enthusiasm for a Ph.D. that will combine field work, laboratory analyses, and modeling are encouraged to get in touch. * Possible directions for study include: the fidelity of melt inclusion records of magmatic volatiles, the magnitude and sources of release of CO2 and other volatiles during Large Igneous Province magmatism, development of new geologic proxies for large-scale volcanic degassing, and how evolving processes in deep magma plumbing systems influence the tempo of gas release and climate disruption. Funding for this position derives from a National Science Foundation grant to investigate the mantle sources of CO2 during the emplacement of Large Igneous Provinces, enormous magmatic events that can encompass 10^5-10^7 km3 magma, and that have been linked with major carbon cycle disruptions and mass extinctions through Earthâ??s history. Such Large Igneous Province-driven carbon cycle disruptions represent some of the only available analogs for the scale of present-day anthropogenic carbon release. They are thus valuable natural experiments that can shed light on Earthâ??s near-future climate. Inquiries are welcome for a start date in Spring 2024 as well as Fall 2024. Prospective candidates with Masterâ??s degrees, non-traditional and diverse career paths are particularly encouraged to apply. The Rutgers Volcano Lab (rutgersvolcano.weebly.com) is committed to fostering a supportive environment with a team-oriented approach to science. We see work-life balance as essential to creativity.
